Sounds like a cool childhood- we didn’t travel much. Just around neighboring towns really. Would been cool to hop a train and go places. And yep on the service- we get less today and pay more unfortunately. Would been nice to have dining carts to chill in -

In April 2006 I went overseas for the first time. I hadn't flown in years, so wanted to see as much as I could while I was gone. I got to take the Eurostar from Paris to London. The AAA agent that booked my trip (a week in London prior to a three week bus tour of the British Isles), got me a first class ticket which cost $100 at the time. It was well worth it. Very comfortable seating, and they served a hot meal of our choice plus champagne. They offered other alcoholic drinks as well. It was the best train ride I'd had in years. I just checked the cost today, and for Eurostar Plus, which I would assume is first class, it's$349, and for Eurostar Premium, it's $559.
