“Tax-exempt status is granted to educational institutions to enable them to successfully carry out their mission of education, and for research universities, of research,” Garber said.

Non-profits. Biggest problem facing America. They become monstrous. This should be something to consider removing across the board. Tax-exempt, and non-profits elimination would put everyone, and every corporation, at odds with government taxation and spending. Probably the only way now to help control both.

That would also mean churches would have to pay taxes on tithes.

Some people think they should, but the taxes have already been paid by the tithe donors. Taxing churches would be double taxation.

Increase the tax rate well beyond 1.4% but provide for a set off for increased spending by universities on (legitimate) stem teaching and stem research.

I think non profits should only be those who take in, say, $200,000 a year and gives awsy 90% per year....anymore than that and it is taxed, and no longer considered non profit.
