Former NBA guard Craig Hodges, regarded as one of the league’s premier three-point shooters before Steph Curry, painfully understands his career is defined more by a letter he wrote than his ability to knock down shots.
As a star reserve with the Chicago Bulls, Hodges joined his teammates in 1991 for a visit to the White House to celebrate the Bulls’ first NBA Championship with President George H.W. Bush. Hodges, an outspoken advocate for social justice and civil rights during his 10-year NBA career, viewed the trip as an opportunity.
Near the end of the celebration, Hodges, dressed in a white dashiki and Muslim kufi hat, gave an envelope to Bush’s press secretary Marlin Fitzwater. The envelope contained an eight-page letter addressed to Bush, a letter Hodges had written to ask the president to be more active in resolving issues facing “poor and minority communities” around the country.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
Probably not the intent of woke S.I. - but their description makes him sound like a narcissist and woke idiot
He would be celebrated by the NBA today. Add a letter praising China and he’d probably be voted MVP.
What is a “star reserve”?
Blackballed by whom? Not clicking SI. Thanks
Given that SI is now just another Disney property I’d say it’s all propaganda…
Everyone would have looked at them funny. It was unheard of at the time.
Maybe he should have written: Mr President, How can we stop young black men from killing each other and everyone else before young black men disappear from the earth?
“Before Game 1 of the Bulls-Los Angeles Lakers NBA Finals in 1991, Hodges tried to organize players from both teams to boycott the game in response to the infamous Rodney King beating...”
Yea, it was the letter to Bush...”
He is an idiot. He last season he average 4 points a game and played less than 10 minutes a game. He was basically done as a player and that’s why the Bulls didn’t resign him and nobody else did either, nobody cared about the letter he gave to Bush.
While I don’t remember the incident—I think it would be appropriate to slip a letter to an aide for the President while at an unrelated event. As described in the excerpt—the ball shooter did not seek to embarass the President or the Whitehouse during the event that honored his team.
Notice that no-one has published the full content of the 8 page letter. The tiny bits that have been published contain nothing that would be even particularly controversial - and indeed - one doesn’t have to be a raging social justice liberal to be “ok” with what has been published. That tells me there is more in the letter - probably some pretty bad judgement on display as well as either threats or nasty comments and statements/accusations.
OR
The letter had nothing to do with his being supposedly “blackballed”, and this is just a desperate grasp for relevance...
This “victim” *had been* one of the league’s premier 3-point shooters, but had already become a bench player because his final playing days were quickly approaching. “Blackballed” meant he went from averaging 11.5 minutes per game to 9.9 MPG. But hey, if the worst QB in football can become a hero to tens of millions by showing his hatred for America, why not him?
Uh-huh. Say, isn't that kind of a long read? Here's what he really needs to ask himself:
1) How was my spelling?
2) 8 pages? He's the President. He has 250 million-plus Americans and a couple of nuclear-armed enemies to worry about while I'm bouncing a basketball. Who the f*** do I think I am?
Giving a letter to an aide is a heck of a lot better than airing your grievances to the press and all in attendance at the event. Don’t see an issue here.

Someone that is One notch Above the “star third stringer”
An oxymoron.
IOW, he is and was (in 1991) a racist and all around bigot. And so's the DNC shill who regurg'd this current DNC talking point -- the term "blackballed" is obviously hideously racist.
I’m sure his problems with social justice are still there. Rather than make an ass of himself he did it the right way. My issue is how they go for more publicity under gentlemanly republicans. Look at how the Hamilton actors treated Pence and his wife. Or Magic Johnson dissing on ‘43 after quitting his ceremonial job. It doesn’t change anything other than to keep the blacks all riled up.
They can do it now with Trump but people will turn away until the next rino takes office.
