Russia's President Vladimir Putin signed a decree late on Tuesday renaming the airport in Volgograd as Stalingrad, as the city was known when the Soviet army defeated the Nazi German forces in the biggest battle of World War Two, APA reports citing Reuters.
"In order to perpetuate the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, I hereby decree ... to assign the historical name 'Stalingrad' to Volgograd International Airport," the decree published on the Kremlin's website said.

Eleanor Roosevelt was a nut and the archetype of nutty communist racist feminist “liberals”.
Groggy missed all the fellow travelers and communists in Europe that were murdered by Bera - add another million or so.
Historians put the total murder count for JS at over 69,000,000, only topped by Mao at 74,000,000
Both are equally demonic. Fdr fought the war to Dave his buddy Stalin, and because his administration was full of Soviet spirs.
Hitler’s number one war was to kill the Jews in Eastern Europe.
Too often forgotten. Even to the detriment of the lunatic. Trains the military needed were used to transport Jews. Jews who fought valiantly for Germany in WWI were murdered.
And coward Einsatz formations of Germans were busy killing Jews only a few miles behind the Army front lines.
It’s truly astonishing.
And then of course, after Stalin’s depredations, the German Army only had to act decent, and they would have been seen as saviors. But their madness meant they attacked those same people and made their own job of killing Russia even harder.
It was truly deranged.
Stalin was a true National Socialist. Instead of German, he did it with Russians.
True. Trotsky wanted to go international, Stalin was National Socialist and did not want to go worldwide (at least then). That’s why Stalin had Trotsky introduced to an ice axe.
And I hear the old joke that the greatest trick the Austrians ever played was convincing the world that Beethoven was Austrian and Hitler wasn’t.
I agree.
“”””We successfully dealt with communism internationally except in a few small gadfly places today.””””
What is it, about 20% of the world’s population and the communist nations include the 2nd most powerful nation in the world?
Stalin and his followers murdered more people than Hitler did.
All have sinned and deserve hell for it.
That is a typical horrible Soviet in-your-face monument.
“That’s why Stalin had Trotsky introduced to an ice axe.”
By the time that happened, Trotsky was just a nuisance. Trotsky was no threat to Stalin by then. It was just cold-blooded revenge.
“Same for Moscow. Taking Moscow didn’t ever mean victory, it just meant you’d be holding a torched empty Moscow All that material was wasted and should have been in that thrust.”
Look at a map of the old Soviet Union. Moscow is the center of the Soviet rail net. Take Moscow and you effectively cut the SU in half. Then Moscow was the center of the Russian heartland, the largest population center, the largest industrial center, and the center of the most centralized regime in history.
At least it was an “in-your-face” monument to the Nazis.
Only good thing Stalin did. Trotsky ultimately would have been much more dangerous to the West than Stalin.
That's kind of an apples to oranges comparison, since even though Hitler was from Austria rather than Germany, he was still an ethnic German. Ethnic Germans in Austria often had a much stronger sense of "Germanness" than those in Germany proper, to distinguish themselves from the ethnic Hungarians, Czechs, etc who also lived in Austria.
Napoleon captured Moscow but it didn’t do him much good. Of course that was before railroads.
Talking about civilians killed directly or starved to death, no doubt Stalin and Mao both surpass Hitler’s victims. But Hitler started WWII in Europe and the death toll from the war plus the Holocaust may surpass Stalin’s victims (but maybe not Mao’s). Not sure what the figure is for how many died because of Imperial Japan’s invasion of China followed by declaring war on the US and the British Empire.
