What the hell were we doing there in the first place? A third world country on the other side of the planet that snuffed out over 60,000 of our future lives? Tell the mothers, wives, and families exactly why their loved ones’ lives ended so early and their dreams were shattered. Why? What was it all for?

Wow. Talk about hindsight. We were there to stop the takeover of the world by the Communists. The Communists had taken Russia and eastern Europe. They had taken over China. They vowed to destroy us and our way of life. In a few years they had taken control of about half the habitable area on earth.

The British managed to stop the Communist insurgency in Malaysia with aggressive anti-insurgency tactics.

We stopped the onslaught in Korea, just barely.

The French tried to stop the Vietnamese communists, but failed. America, the only Western country with the means to do so, stepped in to prevent the Communist takeover of the entire Indochinese peninsula. We had quite a few allies. There were Australians, Canadians, Brits, South Koreans, and quite a few others fighting with us.

The concern was the Communists would win in Vietnam and there would be a domino effect. If we did not stop them in Vietnam, where would we stop them?

Communists had taken over Cuba and were busy pushing Communism in Central and South America.

There was (and still is) a massive fifth column of Communists in the USA. McCarthy has been proven to have been correct. There was a massive infiltration of communists into the U.S. government.

Eventually, the fifth column of leftist media in the USA were able to lie sufficiently to break the will of the American people to triumph in Vietnam. We retreated ignominiously.

But the effort was long enough, and sufficient enough, for world communism to fracture and its failures to become well known. The “domino effect” was real, but Cambodia became enough of a horrible example of the failure of Communism to help stop it elsewhere.

Eventually, we elected Reagan, and he pursued a policy of winning the Cold War, of which Korea and Vietnam were hot spots. Then we won.

Wow. Talk about hindsight.

Mr. Twain, you seem like a smart guy. But maybe I'm wrong.

Don't you see the pattern? First, we create a boogy-man, demeanize him, and then either go directly to war or convince some other poor fools to do our fighting while we send over our money and stuff.

So, here's a short list....

-Commies in Vietnam
-WMDs in Iraq
-Lefteist in Granda
-Drugs in Panama
-Libya instability
-The Taliban in Afganastain

By the way, can you explain why we should worry about communism in another country? Don't they have a right to make their own decisions -- like us? If they want to be commies, then go for it. That works out really well. Right?

How much longer can we attempt to cure the world's problems, and fail most every time, and ignore our own? We've spent our way into bankruptcy with $37 trillion in debt, and growing every day, and no way to pay it off because of these crazy wars that turn out to be disasters. In the meantime, countries like China and Russia spend on infrastructure and their own people. Please explain how we can continue this illusion/disillusion we're practicing.? Inquiring minds want to know.

Eisenhower first articulated the "domino theory" in 1954. We thought countries would fall like dominoes one by one if we didn't stop the process. We thought Communism would remain monolithic as it appeared to be then. In fact nationalism remained important (it's why Tito was able to defy Stalin). Vietnam had a long history of opposing Chinese domination.

I think our basic problem in Vietnam is that we were foreigners and most of the South Vietnamese did not understand what Communism would mean for them (other than those who had fled from the North after the peace settlement in 1954).

Today Vietnam and Laos have Communist governments but Cambodia and Thailand do not. So the other dominoes did not fall. Of course Cambodia had the Khmer Rouge regime for a few years until the Vietnamese ousted it, but would Thailand have become Communist if the US had not fought in Vietnam? Maybe the Khmer Rouge would not have been able to conquer Cambodia if the US-Vietnam War had not happened.
