Basic training has a history of having recruits die. This is nothing new...........

Exactly. Just because they’re in basic training, it doesn’t mean they are in the best of health. People die. At least he didn’t die in the video game section at Walmart.

1973 mid August.
They flew a flag that was to regulate physical
endurance tests because
Lackland AFB can get very hot.
I remember one day while getting ready for a
an timed endurance run, blue flag was displayed, that
meant light exercise only. I pointed this out to our (TI
USAF version of DI).
He said “What flag?”.
Fortunately raised in So. California and being a Cross country runner, I could handle the test.
but I think we lost about 4 guys out of 32.
to heat exhaustion.
I didn’t want any special punishment so I didn’t ask “can we do this again, now”?

Almost every post where I was assigned we had deaths during training exercises.

My son-in-law was in final weeks of basic and on a training exercise stepped into a hole that went all the way up past his upper thigh and the other leg went straight out. He was offered a medical discharge as it caused lots of damage. He has recovered at this point.
