Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, athletic festival held in Sochi, Russia, that took place February 7–23, 2014. The Sochi Games were the 22nd occurrence of the Olympic Winter Games. The Sochi Games marked the first time that the Winter Olympics were held in Russia.
On 27 February 2014, Russian soldiers with no insignia began to occupy the Ukrainian territory of Crimea, and had fully controlled the peninsula by late March. At first, Russia denied that the soldiers were theirs, but Putin later admitted that they were Russian special forces.
