Once a cop or cops realize that they are under persistent, sustained attack with the goal being to overcome them and end their mission, by one or by multiples, then they should do whatever is required to maintain their position.
There used to be a 1950s story about a Texas Ranger in a trailer park to question or arrest someone and the Mexican men formed a threatening crowd against him, so he got his Thompson submachine gun out of his car trunk and raked the ground with it.
The Texas Rangers of old did not yield, they delivered as much force or violence as was required to maintain their lawful authority and to complete their task.
