A tipsy Long Island teen went for a passed-out joyride in a Tesla — which he switched into autopilot mode on a busy Connecticut highway before going to sleep and being busted by cops, state police said.
Garden City native Guido Reinoso-Gallegos, 19, was slumped over the steering wheel as the self-driving vehicle rolled down I-91 south in Wethersfield at just 30 miles per hour with its hazard lights flashing when he was arrested around 12:30 am Friday.
Despite not having his hands on the wheel, Gallegos was charged with driving under the influence because he still needs the awareness to hit the gas or brake at any time if something were to happen, Connecticut State Police told The Stamford Advocate.
“You still need to be, basically, driving without driving, in a sense,” said Trooper Daniel Hill, who believes this to be the first arrest of its kind in the Constitution State.

Luigi and now Guido. What are the Italians pissed off about? Tariffs?
Ironically, it was probably safer for him to be asleep with the car driving on autopilot than him driving it blind drunk.
FWIW, I wouldn’t assume the perp is Italian or a native.
indeed!!... so I would opine that this particular drunk was concerned for the safety of others and entrusted modern AI to drive the vehicle!
Not Guilty!!
It’s not DUI. It’s RUI and that’ll be the defense.
Gallegos is a Spanish name, not Italian.
I’ve probably seen too many DeNiro movies.
Do Teslas know when to pull over for police?
Says he’s a “Garden City native.” Probably got screwed up with “Olive Garden”.
I saw this vid on youtube a while back where this kid hung ankle weights on his tesla steering wheel while cruising down the highway then grabbed a blanket and took a nap in the back seat.
What’s a 19 year old doing with a Tesla?!
Yeah my buddy was able to do that. He hung a paperweight on the steering wheel which the sensors registered as “hands on the wheel”. But I don’t think that works anymore on the newer models. I think they have cameras that have to see your eyes to auto drive. Someone else can confirm. Though that doesn’t explain this story. Maybe he had the older system.
This was bound to happen, this new tech will bring new challenges, new legal challenges in this case.
“Do Teslas know when to pull over for police?”
I won’t reveal the ending. Read the article.
NOBODY expects the Spanish drunk driving on autopilot!
I think his Italian mother married a Spanish father.
I recently rode in a Tesla, self driving, in “hurry” mode. I was AMAZED at how well it drove. Every so often it vibrates the steering wheel to make sure you’re awake. I commented it drove so well, it should be legal to drink and drive as long as it’s in self drive mode.
Garden City is a mega rich neighborhood
Hahahahahahaha!
