The reason this perpetuates is geographical: Ukraine is much less of a functional country without at least some of the Russian enclaves. Without Odessa, Sebastopol, and Mariupol, all they would have left is Kherson from which to export grain and bulk material (I looked, and I don’t see a container port there). Hence, this war is a matter of economic survival to them. Cooking up some kind of deal looks very problematic.

One of the problematic aspects of any deal with Russia might be that it would require Zelensky’s departure. I can’t imagine Putin agreeing to any deal that leaves him in power. JMHO
