Border Patrol agents question Amtrak passengers in Havre about citizenship
Harve Daily News ^ | April 21, 2025 | Tim Leeds

his version updates the headline and clarifies that it was Border Patrol agents who boarded the train.

A judge and attorney from North Dakota said Thursday that he was one of possibly all the passengers on an Amtrak Empire Builder train questioned by federal officers about their citizenship Sunday while the train was stopped in Havre.

The person interviewed by Havre Weekly Chronicle said ICE officers were the ones who questioned him.

A spokesperson for ICE said the activity was not related to that agency, and referred questions to Customs and Border Protection.

ICE representative Alethea Smock repeated that today.

"Confirming again, this was not an ICE activity, and your story was incorrect; many other sites have picked up on it and are saying ICE is boarding trains, this is generally a CBP activity."

Jason Givens, U.S. Border Patrol public affairs specialist, confirmed this morning that it was Border Patrol agents who boarded the train Sunday in Havre.

Smock said it is possible people saw partially obscured "POLICE" labels on the clothing of the people on the train and though the labels said "ICE."

Givens gave background on the agents boarding the train:

"U.S. Border Patrol agents conduct enforcement actions at transportation hubs away from the immediate border as part of the defense-in-depth strategy of disrupting human smuggling activities at transportation sites that are used to further illegal trafficking into the interior of the United States. These operations serve as a vital component to our overall border security efforts.

"Enforcement actions away from the border are within the jurisdiction of the Border Patrol and performed in direct support of immediate border enforcement efforts and as a means of preventing smuggling and criminal organizations from exploiting existing transportation hubs to travel to the interior of the United States."

FReepers some of you noticed and PM me on why I was not posting. I was on vacation. In fact the days this story happened I was on this very train, the "Empire Builder".

Why did this person find this "intimidating"? I know in my case if ICE hears my West Virginian accent they will pass me in 10 seconds because Tren de Aragua can't fake that.

I never saw any ICE agents and none of them ever questioned me. However I later learned this does happen in Havre a lot because they sneak in from Canada and try to board Amtrak.

“Why did this person find this “intimidating”?”

We all know that is the snowflake / woke / liberal word du jour. That and “fearful.” These pansies are afraid of their own shadows. Us legals never know fear or intimidation.

Yeah, but can the Tren de Aragua gangers say "Shibboleth"? LOL

The story mentions an attorney from ND so just for others clarity Havre is in Northern Montana.

Amtrak operates on the ‘highland’ of Montana.

From here in Bozeman it’s just 3 1/2 hours to the nearest Amtrak station in Great Falls, MT.

It’s a feel good story IMHO. There are som undesirables that have come in from the North.

FWIW I really like West Virginia had have been there 50+ times for work.

Driving with friends across New Mexico in 1996 we were pulled over and asked the same question. Didn’t cross our minds to be “intimidated.”

Yes, I’m glad to hear that they are doing this. I used to get stopped on the highway to and from Nogales, pretty much a nonevent, but I did see them take someone into custody.

I remember traveling on trains in Europe before the EU. At every border a new crew of border guards came around and inspected papers (passports).

Part of the defense-in-depth strategy of disrupting human smuggling activities.

Hat tip MAGA in action.

Havre was notorious as a whiskey smuggling town during the prohibition times. Because of the harsh winter weather, the central town even had an underground city with speakeasies and stash vaults.
