The best way forward would be to reverse the land grab made by Stalin and return to Poland, Hungary, and Romania the Ukraine controlled territories they held before WW2 (area in green) and returning all of land ceded by Lenin back to Russia (area in blue). Ukraine itself would return to its 1917 borders.

Lenin "ceded" the blue colored area to Ukraine, because it was overwhelmingly populated by-Ukrainians. The same is true of the rest of the colored areas.
