There is an old Roman saying that "a fat pope is followed by a skinny one." Over time, the Catholic Church tends to find its balance and way forward by trying opposites from one papacy to the next.

We can hope that the College of Cardinals will pick a new pope to remedy the lapses, follies, bad theology, and scandals of Pope Francis. And with the Vatican's finances chronically in chaos and deficit, it would seem wise to name a pope who appeals to wealthy conservative Catholics so often disrespected by Pope Francis.
