Twenty-one humanoid robots joined thousands of runners at the Yizhuang half-marathon in Beijing on Saturday, the first time these machines have raced alongside humans over a 21-km (13-mile) course.
The robots from Chinese manufacturers such as DroidUP and Noetix Robotics came in all shapes and sizes, some shorter than 120 cm (3.9 ft), others as tall as 1.8 m (5.9 ft). One company boasted that its robot looked almost human, with feminine features and the ability to wink and smile.
Some firms tested their robots for weeks before the race. Beijing officials have described the event as more akin to a race car competition, given the need for engineering and navigation teams.
The winning robot was Tiangong Ultra, from the Beijing Innovation Center of Human Robotics, with a time of 2 hours and 40 minutes. The men’s winner of the race had a time of 1 hour and 2 minutes.
The centre is 43% owned by two state-owned enterprises, while tech giant Xiaomi’s robotics arm and leading Chinese humanoid robot firm UBTech have equal share in the rest.
Tang Jian, chief technology officer for the robotics center, said Tiangong Ultra’s performance was aided by long legs and an algorithm allowing it to imitate how humans run a marathon

Well, at least we still have some sort of an edge when the Terminators start coming for us...
Yes, we just need to run a 13 mile course in under 2 hours and 40 minutes.
Or as the old bear joke...I just need to outrun you.

LOL. No matter what, when new technology arrives, it gets harnessed to sex!
I’m with you. Every time I go there, it is as if they deliberately obscure how to see a given video.
Daily Mail is the same.
Another gender option on the self-identify block on legal forms.
It won’t be long these robots will identify as human and start competing in our sports.
I have no clue what kind of people like that kind of advertising technique. I’m 62 and have NEVER purchased anything, jammed in your face the way these ads deliver their gimmick. Never since the start of the web. I never even give them enough attention to see what 95% are displaying!!
These companies are doing nothing but wasting their money in this concept.
well that is nice if that is indeed all you see! I’ll check it out...
Where did Cherry-2000 finish in the race?
I agree. And they do things that are made so that when you try to click on a link or a video, it jumps up, and you click on an ad.
lol... enough to push someone over the edge!
