Actually you can go down to Staples and sign up for the KTN. Need to take birth certificate and State ID. Not too much of a hassle.
And you can get in the shorter security line at the airport. And not have to take off your shoes. But it is about $80.

A little harder here in Mi. You have to go to a designated office with an appointment. Takes 4-6 weeks and about $50.00. Worth it l think.
