“received their official separation notices Thursday”
I’m surprised they didn’t get the RIF letters on Friday afternoon......that’s when everyone got theirs at my facility back in the 90s.....the letters were handed out in the cafeteria and then we were all routed to the parking lot with no detours allowed.
Reason for the Friday afternoon hand out was to give people a 2 day cooling off period......that idea was only partly successful. 😏
There was a big reduction in force at my place of employment in 92. They had two security guards come to your desk with a box. They let you clean out your desk while they waited. The then took your ID badge and any company keys, pagers or other things related to your job and escorted you to your job.
No letter or prior notification of your separation from your employment.
Word I got from the guards is that there was quite a variation in the response from those given a box. One that I heard about threatened to come back kill people.

“- You’re gonna lay off Samir and Michael?
- Ah, yeah, we’re gonna bring in some entry-level graduates. Farm some work out to Singapore. That’s the usual deal.
- It’s standard operating procedure.
- Do they know this yet?
- No. No, of course not.
- We find it’s always better to fire people on a Friday. Studies have statistically shown that there’s less chance of an incident if you do it at the end of the week.
