In 1964 most of the country voted democrat (LBJ won over 90% of the electoral vote). By 1972, the entire country (except for Massachusetts and D.C.) voted Republican (Nixon won 97% of the electoral vote). In 1984, the entire country (except for Minnesota and D.C.) voted Republican (Reagan won 98% of the electoral vote).

In 1988, most of the country voted Republican (Bush won 79% of the popular vote), but Washington state and Oregon switched to the dark side, never to return. By 1992, the country was fairly evenly divided (Clinton won 69% of the electoral vote, but only 43% of the popular vote), but that year California moved to the dark side, never to return.

Meanwhile, in Texas, democrats held nearly every statewide elected office from Reconstruction (when democrats and their KKK enforcement wing lynched any of their former slaves who tried to vote Republican) until the 1980s. By the 1990s, Republicans held every statewide office in Texas and no democrat has been elected to any statewide office since then.

Here in my county in rural Texas, no Republican was elected to any elected office from Reconstruction until 1996, when a Republican was elected D.A. By 2000, every elected office was held by a Republican and no democrat has been elected to any office since then. Meanwhile, during the same period, Dallas, Houson, and San Antonio went from solidly Republican to solidly democrat. Austin has been mostly democrat since WWII (when its population was less than 1/10 the size it is now, but over the past 20 years Austin refugees have been turning all of the adjacent counties democrat (much like California is turning adjacent states democrat).

Sometime people change their politics to match everyone around them. Nothing magical about it.

I can tell you don't get around much. Ya think CA housing prices are like that in half of America? C'mon.

I can show you 75 year old beaters in crappy areas going for 850k in the LA area. Ask any realtor, they'll tell ya if it wasn't for foreigners coming in with big money, home prices would take a big hit.

What do you think is happening? Leave it to Beaver families moving into the LA area? Not happening. Trust me here.

So according to you all of Texas is a garbage dump because all you look at is the slums of Austin and ignore everything else

You are setting up a straw man and ignoring less extreme options (as well as the extremism of your notions).

As others have pointed out, the electorate does shift. The Democrats do a good job of promising more free stuff and license to follow your own lusts and stick other people for the bill of the consequences. That is very attractive to an irresponsible population raised in comfort. And the Democrat vision of a nanny state is very attractive to people from broken families as it provides a sort of father figure in the form of big government, with the security it provides.

Nor do you allow for the existence of legal immigration, which is also a substantial factor. You imagine a sudden influx of illegal aliens in the 1990's, but it has been a steady flow for decades, not a one-time surge such as would explain California's shift.

Go ahead and look for evidence of illegal voting, but don't extrapolate beyond what is warranted by the facts. You are focused on a 1% explanation and lazily refusing to seek beyond that sliver.

I said nothing about Texas. You’re all over the road with stupid evasive comments. See the tagline? You defined it perfectly.

Yet who is the target audience for all that free crap the democrats offer? That’s right.... illegals.

Amazing how people here downplay illegal aliens when just a few years ago all these illegals surging into texas made every person on this forum freak out all screaming that texas would now be democrat forever if that continued, so which one is it?

You have provided zero links or evidence for your false accusations while I have provided links to back up my case, now put up or shut up.

Of course California is trending Republican. It is because democrats are fleeing the state like rats fleeing a sinking ship.

I'm not from California but my impression is that millions of "woke" White Democrats have left the state to move to places like Portland, Colorado, Austin, Arizona, etc.

So California is now much more diverse. And they're more likely to listen to Trump's messaging.

White Democrats in Portland are all brainwashed and they literally see Adolf Hitler in Donald Trump.

So the potential is there if we have a Hispanic version of DeSantis running for Governor in 2026, maybe the Republicans will be able to win it especially after Gavin Newsom's mismanagement due to LA Wildfires.
