I remember that and when the movie came out, my kids and I went to see it at the local IMAX.
My daughter summed it all up perfectly when she said *I didn’t think a movie that you knew the ending of could be so suspenseful.*
And it was.
Tell it to the Titanic morons.
To those nearby, the liftoffs were still a local story as I recall. People still went to watch launches. I can’t speak for national tv coverage. I definitely remember the splashdowns of many of them. My parents were enthusiasts, and my uncle, aunt, and cousins lived even closer than we did.
