There are several events going on simultaneously. Ukraine has invaded Russian territory. Russia is launching offensives in Sumy and Kharkiv. And according to ISW Russian monthly territorial gains in square kilometers per month has been declining since last November.

During WW-II, sides would gain or lose hundreds of square kilometers in a day. Now this is what Russia gets in a month. Russia is trading lives for land while Ukraine is preserving the lives of its forces by giving up land and making Russia pay for it. Russia has lost so many armored vehicles they are sending Ladas and UAZ vans to the front.

After three years of not defeating Ukraine, it should be clear this is not the Russian army of WW-II or the Cold War anymore.
