To your point, the more we impose tariffs and interdict trade with China the less reason for China to refrain from invading Taiwan. A threat loses its power once the trigger is pulled.

That is not to judge whether it might be better now to precipitate a clean break off of trade with China while we have the momentum domestically to do what inevitably must be done.

Yes. And let’s remember that the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor because they thought we had declared economic war on them.
