I had an ancestor caught spying in southern Missouri about 1864—for which side depends on who is telling the story—most likely on the side of the angels caught by the Bluebellies.

Whoever caught him was going to shoot him, but he said that “if you shoot me you have to feed my 12 kids” so they let him go. Even Bluebellies had some sense at one time.
