At my SIL’s in Ponte Vedra, I was told the Publix across the street from the Publix was a legacy of Publix trying a Whole Foods-like concept store chain called GreenWise. The concept was dropped, and in some locations they just rebranded as Publix and stayed open. She said the former GreenWise store has more hot prepared foods.

A GreenWise store in Tallahassee near the FSU campus and student housing went though a similar evolution into a more conventional Publix with a cafeteria.

Not only is Publix a closely held corporation still dominated by its founding family, but it is politically powerful and has a solid grip on the grocery market in Florida due to first rate management. GreenWise and similar innovations that falter get shut down or modified.
