Please spare us the “royal archive” fan-fiction.
The actual protocol – the one Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and Kensington Palace have followed for decades and never once needed to invent on the fly – is crystal clear: clothing loaned or gifted for official engagements is returned to the designer, donated to charity, or, in rare cases, purchased at full price if the wearer truly wants to keep it. There is no secret clause that lets anyone, prince or princess, simply spirit haute couture into their private wardrobe and call it “archiving history.” That rule does not exist, never has, and no Palace spokesperson has ever backed it – because it’s pure fiction retrofitted the moment you got caught...
