President Trump’s threat to back a primary challenger against Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) is just the latest boiling point in their hot-and-cold relationship — and the Kentuckian is brushing off the attacks.
“It’s temporary,” the Kentuckian told me after Trump threatened to end his political career over Massie’s “no” vote on a six-month continuing resolution, backed by the president, that would keep the government open through September.
Massie was the only House Republican to vote against the legislation, which he argued does not set up Congress to make lasting cuts to government spending.
The libertarian congressman sees Trump’s public attacks as a tactic to “keep other people in line.”
The House GOP, after all, has a razor-thin majority and almost no room for error.
“Probably somebody had a strategy that said, ‘We can’t let any more horses out of the barn, so let’s whack Massie and then the other horses will stay in the barn,'” Massie said. “Because nobody expected that to change me, right? What am I gonna say? ‘Oh, I was so misguided for the last 12 years. I misdirected all of my efforts into fiscal conservatism.’”
Massie’s “no” vote was hardly a surprise to Trump or other Republicans in Congress.
Massie is often the sole GOP lawmaker voting against various measures. He was also the lone GOP vote against a budget resolution framework for Trump’s ambitious legislative agenda. His problem on that measure was that it didn’t cut spending enough.
A number of Republicans are privately furious that Trump is trying to make an example out of Massie when they saw him as simply standing on principle.

Probably the best way forward is if he runs for Senate and departs the House after 12 years.
He will not be getting the Trump endorsement though but this will not hurt him in Kentucky trust me half their voters are registered Democrats even though they went 70% for Trump
Massie is right on this spending bill and right to know that spending massive amounts of money now, in this bill, will not produce spending cuts in September. Oddly, this bill does not even reduce the wasteful spending that has been identified by DOGE.
Massie was right five years ago when he tried valiantly to stop the $2 trillion in “emergency COVID spending”, that paid for tape on Home Depot floors and government marketing of 6’ social distancing, and also the DOD funding of the COVID fake vaccine that has killed millions. Trump then attacked Massie and demanded he be “primaried” for warning against the very thing we all wish now we had avoided. Massie was right. Trump was totally wrong. Then and now.
Good and Thoughtful post thank you
“Massie is right on this spending bill and right to know that spending massive amounts of money now, in this bill, will not produce spending cuts in September. Oddly, this bill does not even reduce the wasteful spending that has been identified by DOGE.”
Massie is correct except for one point. If the Democrat didn’t offset Massie’s no vote, the Republican party would crash and burn and give the Democrats the upper hand in budget negotiations as well as blaming Trump if there is a shutdown.

By the same logic, Massie should have voted for the $2 trillion that funded the fake pandemic which was sold as an existential threat to all of humanity, but in reality was the funding to steal the election from Trump. Massie almost all alone stood up and pointed out how wrong it was and how it should be stopped. Trump trashed him for that.
We should have done what Massie said then and we should have done it now. There will be no spending cuts in September. And Trump has now seriously harmed his base by attacking one of the only House members that the base believes is doing his job.
IMHO.
Of two evils,choose neither.
