The last option I can find is that Trump views China as the main rival for the U.S., and it’s better to prop up Putin, despite the immorality of doing so, to have Russia an ally against China. That's a possibility, since we also may need Russia's help to stop the massacres of Christians in Syria by the neo-ISIS animals (or at least help to evacuate the survivors out of that he**hole). Some Syrian Christians are seeking refuge in the still-Russian controlled military base near Latakia.
While everyone's distracted with Ukraine, our alleged NATO ally Erdogan is looking the other way.
Trump should seriously consider moving our nuclear bombs out of Incirlik, as part of a negotiation with the Turks. The area is becoming too unstable.

Why does Trump think it’s his job to dictate what peace should look like in the Ukraine, rather than just to get us out of the conflict and expend our resources on us?

Or maybe Trump is what he says, sickened by the slaughter and wants it to end.

Certainly, that is what Trump wants the public to believe. The man is extremely attentive and good at polishing his public image. It will be something for the historians to decide. We don't have enough information.

Deranged Trump hater. Go back to DU. You don’t belong here. Read the disclaimer:

We do not want our pages filled with their arrogant, obnoxious, repugnant bile. Liberals, usurpers, and other assorted malcontents are considered unwelcome trolls on FR and their accounts and or posts will be summarily dismissed at the convenience of the site administrators.”

Deranged Trump hater. Go back to DU. You don’t belong here. Read the disclaimer: Sorry, I got kicked out of DU for trying to get Obama primaried. As for conservative causes, Putin wants to recreate the Soviet Union, and if you ,remember, President Reagan called that the "evil empire", and cautioned that we would only have "peace through strength".
"I pointed out that, as good Marxist-Leninists, the Soviet leaders have openly and publicly declared that the only morality they recognize is that which will further their cause, which is world revolution. I think I should point out I was only quoting Lenin, their guiding spirit, who said in 1920 that they repudiate all morality that proceeds from supernatural ideas -- that's their name for religion -- or ideas that are outside class conceptions. Morality is entirely subordinate to the interests of class war. And everything is moral that is necessary for the annihilation of the old, exploiting social order and for uniting the proletariat.
Well, I think the refusal of many influential people to accept this elementary fact of Soviet doctrine illustrates an historical reluctance to see totalitarian powers for what they are. We saw this phenomenon in the 1930's. We see it too often today...
At the same time, however, they must be made to understand we will never compromise our principles and standards. We will never give away our freedom. We will never abandon our belief in God. And we will never stop searching for a genuine peace. But we can assure none of these things America stands for through the so-called nuclear freeze solutions proposed by some.
The truth is that a freeze now would be a very dangerous fraud, for that is merely the illusion of peace. The reality is that we must find peace through strength."

I don't hate Trump. I support most of his agenda. His move to embrace Putin is troubling because Putin cannot be trusted, and by a reasonable definition, Putin is a war criminal.

BS. He is not “embracing” Putin. Trump knows what he has to deal with. Besides, the USA has made deals and negotiation with worse bastards than Putin. What is your brilliant idea to end the war?
