Light! Taped for traction. Whacking someone with it would damage and bend it.

Back in the day (1966) our batons were taped up cardboard cylinders. To add more excitement to the sport, they should use a sticks of dynamite instead of a batons. Put a long fuse on it and really get those runners motivated and moving.
