I have a relative that made almost that much in overtime last year. He was part of a Federal Task Force. I love the guy…but WE were paying him almost unlimited overtime, and he doubled his salary. And now he gets that tax free? I am not sure that is how people want this to work.

I vote yes - overtime should be taxed.

If you’re paid a salary, you don’t get overtime pay when you work more than 40 hours.

If you work multiple part-time jobs, you don’t get overtime pay, even if you work more than 40 hours altogether. (You also don’t receive benefits.)

Meanwhile, someone with a full-time job who’s paid hourly receives a higher hourly wage if he works more than 40. And now he won’t have to pay taxes on that extra pay?

I don’t know. I paid tax on a portion of S.S. for the many years i worked. It didn’t seem too excessive. It seems to me that Congress should be willing to do their share as their overtime pay was a a lot more than my regular pay.

Fair Tax.... Tax on sales. No need for reporting income, keeping records, subjecting yourself to penalties, imprisonment and property confiscation. No need for paying CPAs / Accountants! No complex regulations / laws that no one understands and no two “experts” can explain the same way. No need for a large IRS force with investigators, attorneys, judges etc. Employers costs decrease in that they would no longer need staffs of accountants and lawyers to ensure compliance with withholding and reporting requirements.

Who knows what Reagan was thinking when he signed the bill taxing social security. He was great but did some dumb things. Amnesty his biggest.

I think Congress needs to pass this. Does anyone know if these 3 items are in the big beautiful bill?

Not that I ever reported a dime of it anyway, but it still means a lot.

A lot of tips are added to the bill so they show up on your paycheck and must be reported.

Social Security for seniors being taxed never made sense since it is a government payout with money they took from you to begin with. It is not generated revenue.

Exactly, makes zero sense unless the government is evil and cruel.

I don’t even begin to understand the rationale for not taxing overtime.

Of course, SS payments out aren’t directly tied at all to SS payments in, but what is your rationale for differentiating between the half of the payments in that appear directly on pay stubs—and the half that don’t?

The tariff is the most “fair” tax of all.

Can’t say it’s like this for every Fed, but back when I retired it was the average of the high 3 salaries. Directly from the GS table. Overtime, if worked, had no effect on pension.

Easy solution. Fire him and let him find a job in the private sector.

If he's as good as he believes, he should have no problem finding a job for a company that's willing to pay him the same salary.

There's too many people 'working' and I use that term loosely, in the public sector.
