Thank you! Very interesting. It never occurred to me that the size of the venue had anything to do with the actual performance!

arousal, jealousy, and violence

Unheard of in an opera.

My favorite opera, for all that its a real “espanolada” -
Spanish-ade, like lemonade.

Its got more truly memorable bits than any three others.

The greatest version I recall is the most recent Met one (ten years ago?) with Elina Garanca . She can really belt it out, while being a superb actress. Her Carmen is TOUGH. Savage indeed, and way bigger than life.

Garanca and Alagna practically set the stage on fire with their tension and energy.

The best Spanish music was written by the French.

The best French music in Carmen was written by a Spaniard (Sebastian Iradier, music teacher to the Empress Eugenie).

The original of the Habanera (El Arreglito, the little arrangement, Iradier) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AriV6ogNbVA

Bizet changed that thing so much that it’s pretty much an original composition.

The duet Parle Moi De Ma Mere! gets me every time.

Does Carmen at 150 still collect Social Security and vote?

More than that, she smuggles cigarettes, seduces the Guardia Civil and drinks like a fish.

Chat GPT:

In the Gilligan’s Island episode titled “The Producer”, the castaways set Shakespeare’s Hamlet to the music of Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen. This creative twist adds humor and charm to the episode, featuring memorable musical numbers like “To Be or Not to Be.” It’s one of the most iconic and beloved episodes of the series! Let me know if you’d like more details about it.

“Carmen Jones” with Dorothy Dandridge was even better.

Thank you! Vicotia de los Angeles was great in this role. Powerful range.

I preferred the Gilligan’s Island episode about The Mosquitoes (obviously a reference to The Beatles), but I can get into opera as well.
