One person has been killed, and over 1,000 residents in Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture have been evacuated, as of Friday (Feb 28).
Japan was battling its largest wildfire in more than three decades on Saturday (Mar 1), one of several blazes that have killed one person and forced the evacuation of more than a thousand. Flames are estimated to have spread over about 1,200ha in the forest of Ofunato in the northern region of Iwate since fire broke out on Wednesday, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency. "We're still examining the size of the affected area, but it is the biggest since the 1992 wildfire" in Kushiro, Hokkaido, an agency spokesman told AFP.
That fire burned 1,030ha, the previous record. Around 1,700 firefighters were being mobilised from across the country, the agency said. Aerial footage from public broadcaster NHK showed white smoke billowing up and covering an entire mountain.
Local police found the body of one person who had been burned on Thursday. Over 1,000 nearby residents have been evacuated and more than 80 buildings had been damaged as of Friday, according to the Ofunato municipality. The cause of the blaze remained unknown.

Make him row the boat all the way over.
That wildfire Tokyo had in 1945 was really something.
Wow. Wildfire.
Didn’t know that was a thing outside of the US. /s
Next up: The “Japanese Wildfire Crisis.” /s/s
Well, I suppose that depends on how much their American educated youth have infiltrated their bureaucracy and power base.
No, no, send Karen Bass and the lesbian Fire Chief
Bro that was like 80 years ago...
Pretty sure we know know who started those fires in ‘45, how, and why!
I don’t suppose this would be prime Japanese RE that the globalists might want for themselves?

China’s got dibs.
Iwate-ken is to Japan what maybe Wisconsin or Idaho are to us.
The only land in Japan anyone wants is in the coastal region from Tokyo to Kobe, which is where more than half the population resides. The rest of Japan might as well be rural backwater, with some highlights like Kanazawa, Sendai, and Fukuoka.
All by himself with no one else to help him.
Nice.
Thread title said biggest in decades.
Actually, “modern” (do nothing) forest management techniques have spread all over the globe. There are enviros everywhere! Especially to Europe.
The results are, guess it, identical.
Also, that they are all blaming global warming.
