yldstrk, I’m afraid you and I will be outnumbered on this thread. I was 17 (and a bit naive) when I saw it to great acclaim on its first release. However, 1/2 through the movie I realized there wasn’t a single person in it that I liked or cared about.
(I WAS cold though. I think about the winter scenes ever winterr to this day.)

Totally agree.
Pasternak was overwhelmed by the revolution himself and stumbled his way through those terrible times the way most of us would. He was a poet, rather than a novelist, so he was interested in specific moments of beauty more than anything else. That may account for some of the defects in the novel and in Yuri Zhivago’s character.
