Odessa is paradise on earth. I luckily was able to spend 3 weeks for three summers there from 2009 to 2011. What a beautiful place. Sad what it’s become.

I looked it over by satellite. Odessa ain’t squat as a port. There’s some bulk loading there (probably grain and oil) but only one container dock capable of only two or three ships.

I wasn’t aware that there were so many Jews in Odessa killed by Hitler. Here’s a chatGPT list of the top 10 cities:
- Warsaw, Poland – ~375,000
- Łódź, Poland – ~233,000
- Vilnius, Lithuania – ~55,000
- Kraków, Poland – ~60,000
- Lvov (Lviv), Ukraine – ~110,000
- Budapest, Hungary – ~40,000 (in Budapest; many more Hungarian Jews were killed elsewhere)
- Minsk, Belarus – ~90,000
- Kiev, Ukraine – ~34,000 (Babi Yar massacre)
- Odessa, Ukraine – ~50,000
- Białystok, Poland – ~50,000
The 50k is less than the 200k implied in the article. I’ve visited all except Białystok, Łódź, and Minsk. I’m surprised Prague isn’t listed.

It is my understanding that Odessa is Ukraine’s finest city.

The number of war dead in recent years is comparable to the number of Russian ethnics dissatified with being ruled from Kiev.
The war is a disaster. Most wars are.
