Why does airtraffic control need a Verizon system to function?

How would you communicate information from every city with an airport to every other one? Dixie cups and strings?

Good question unless flight plans aren’t loading up to Center. Once airborne the Departure guys can communicate with Center then Approach control. Maybe too much writing of info @ Center which increase error probability.

Long-haul fiber between cities.
Medium-range fiber between close cities.
Short-haul “Last mile” fiber between central offices and the end-customer.

FAA did not build out its own fiber network. FAA leases entire fiber strands or DWDM channels from Verizon.
