At the CPAC 2025 meeting, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni who was making an address to the conference via video call, experienced an unintended moment of candour when her microphone was still switched on after her speech.
Just after her speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C on Saturday, February 22, she was heard saying ‘Volevo morì’, which in Roman Italian translates to ‘I wanted to die’ in English.
The off-the-cuff remark, made without realising the audio was still live, was quickly picked up and shared, going viral on social media, turning it into a minor gaffe in front of the hundreds of attendees at the conference. It’s not clear how many understood Italian.
Scientists issue warning: Italy is not prepared for possible eruption of "one of world’s most dangerous volcanoes" What happened off-camera during Meloni speech?
The comment most likely reflected her exhaustion or something off-camera that happened during the speech, rather than a serious statement about appearing at CPAC, but it stood out due to its informal and dramatic tone, contrasting with the polished and confident nature of her formal address. The incident added a humanising, albeit unintended, footnote to her participation at the event.
CPAC is an annual political conference held in the US, mostly attended by conservative activists, politicians, and supporters. It features speeches, panels, and networking opportunities for the American right. It often has a focus on issues like limited government, free-market economy, and traditional conservative values.
She was talking about that time Biden smelled like crap. Even his breath, as he blew on her ear.
Adam Woodward - My goodness! WHY didn’t someone just ASK her, instead of trying to guess what she meant??? Geeez!
That's the movie I want to see.
Not much of a gaffe. Or news item.
So, I really don’t know other than remote observation but, if she gets the elite yoops “running” EUtopia wadded up, I approve. Laz?
Need one ask?
Not necessary!
But come to think of it, this reminded me of Senta Berger.
Agreed.
Story here? Probably not.
That is a truly classic picture!
You post is a good one! I would want to die if I stepped into Joe’s droppings.
