This sum, exceeding Ukraine’s pre-war economic output twofold, was not mentioned previously. The purpose of this amount - whether for past or future support - remains unclear.

No its clear - sell your country or suffer the consequences - 47 thinks war is some sort of real estate deal, except some people die.

Seems the dispute is how each views the mineral rights contract. The US wants it as repayment for the money we have sunk into this black hole of a war and also to enable a little of their half for reconstruction and most of Ukraine’s half for reconstruction. Zelensky wants it as payment for US to guarantee its future security against Russia. That’s a hell, no in my book and it apparently is even more of a hell, no in Trump’s book.We had no vital national ecurity interest in Ukraine when the war started and we won’t have one when it ends

These guys bullied Russia over pill flowing through Ukrainian pipelines, built by Russia and maintained by Russia.

I certainly hope Trump doesn’t accept a damned things that says Ukraine is going to skim off the top. Or else WE will be in a war there in 10 years

There is no reason for Zelensky to sign anything now.

Don’t do it. Sign with Europe...

We should not force a deal. Just let him figure things out towards peace and minerals with his neighbors.

“No its clear - sell your country or suffer the consequences - 47 thinks war is some sort of real estate deal, except some people die.”

That is what it comes down to Pif.
After all the blood and guts it is going to be a realestate deal.
Watch for Poland and Hungary to want a “piece”.
The Ukainian armed forces fought a good fight but to no avail.
So many generations on both sides have been “erased”.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Lindsay Graham is behind the scenes egging Zelensky on.

Right? The little green weasel still seems to think he’s calling the shots. When you’re about $300B in debt, you have no shots to call.

Is he still in denial that his patsy Biden is no longer in the picture?

From what I have read, these “rare earth minerals” located in Ukraine are both questionable and mostly commercially unviable. These rare minerals are sprinkled all over the planet, but only in certain locations can they be extracted at a commercially viable cost.

It appears that many of the alleged deposits in Ukraine either may not exist (as the only “proof” of their existence is highly questionable old Soviet surveys) or are not at all commercially viable (cost of extraction and processing far exceeds their value) or not accessible via current technology.

In case anyone else has wondered, as I did, why all these mineral riches ostensibly lying around Ukraine for the taking have never been tapped in the past 30+ years, the answers appear to be: (1) not commercially viable, (2) unproven, other than aforementioned questionable Soviet-era surveys, and (3) foreign investors attempting to investigate mining potential and invest must first run a gauntlet of outstretched palms wanting greasing with hefty bribes through the corrupt Ukrainian government bureaucracy.

Here are a few links:

https://www.spglobal.com/market-intelligence/en/news-insights/articles/2025/2/ukraine-rare-earths-potential-relies-on-soviet-assessments-may-not-be-viable-87318842

https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/what-are-ukraines-rare-earths-why-does-trump-want-them-2025-02-05/

So, is Trump stupid enough to buy a pig in A poke? I doubt it — he’s a smart businessman, after all. I wondered at first if this was a way to call Zelensky bluff (after all, Zelensky first brought up the idea of trading these minerals for support and wanting to make a deal”). Or a way to force Zelensky to refuse the deal so that we could wash our hands of him.

I saw a recent video of Trump answering questions from the press aboard Air Force One where he said (sorry I can’t remember which) either “Who knows how much they’re worth anyway?” or “Or knows whether they are worth anything?”. So of course he knows how questionable this deal is.

Interesting times!

Thanks for the links. It is so interesting that assertions fly by, and so many making assertions provide no links. So, thanks for those links.

I too think these interesting times. This first month of an administration to run yet another three years and eleven months suggests we will have and likely enjoy these interesting times.

' As to the notion of those minerals in the ground, I suspect the leases already arranges with Blackrock, Vanguard, State Street and a couple of European hedge funds will also be finding the next months most interesting, and less enjoyable.

Thanks for the links.

Fascinating. So President Trump is demanding a $500bn return from Ukrainian minerals when it’s highly unlikely the value of the REMs can possibly achieve it... And the mineral wealth of the rest of the country can’t come close to that sum either. Ukraine would have to spend $billions on reconstruction and redevelopment before the USA sees a single cent.

$200bn might be doable over time. But $500bn... You’re not going to get that for decades.
