In a bombshell revelation, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has exposed a shocking level of federal spending abuse, revealing that the U.S. government has over 4.6 million active credit cards in circulation, processing a staggering 90 million transactions worth nearly $40 billion in Fiscal Year 2024 alone.
“The US government currently has ~4.6M active credit cards/accounts, which processed ~90M unique transactions for ~$40B of spend in FY24. DOGE is working w/ the agencies to simplify the program and reduce admin costs – we will report back in 1 week,” the account wrote.

The statement reads:
The United States Government spends too much money on programs, contracts, and grants that do not promote the interests of the American people.
For too long, taxpayers have subsidized ideological projects overseas and domestic organizations engaged in actions that undermine the national interest.
The American people have seen their tax dollars used to fund the passion projects of unelected bureaucrats rather than to advance the national interest. The American people have a right to see how the Federal Government has wasted their hard-earned wages.
I therefore direct the heads of executive departments and agencies (agencies) to take all appropriate actions to make public, to the maximum extent permitted by law and as the heads of agencies deem appropriate to promote the policies of my Administration, the complete details of every terminated program, cancelled contract, terminated grant, or any other discontinued obligation of Federal funds.
Agencies shall ensure that such publication occurs in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and the terms and conditions of the underlying contract, grant, or other award.
Why wouldn’t the agencies use credit cards?
As a bureaucrat in the Department of Defense, I was required to use an official credit card for travel expenses.
The credit card made it easy for the people checking the expenses to know what was spent for what. The government got a better deal on fees than what I could get as an individual.
Government credit cards, probably financed best hotels, finest restaurants, and personal purchases.
Ask Vegas how government credit cards are used.
So, people have a credit card and used it on average 20 times? We should burn down the country over this?
I would hope the cards are used and provide a good paper trail.
The fact of 90 million transactions tells us nothing by itself but gives gateway pundit something to sprinkle with clickbait drama.
I think the problem I’d related to the charges on the cards not having oversight for legitimacy. And I know that the govt doesn’t question the thriftiness of employees and their purchases.
I knew a Ford executive with a credit card expense account who would take some friends out for happy hour on Fridays. When it came time to leave, he would look at the bill, tell everyone what they owed, collect their cash then pay the bill with the Ford issued credit card and pocketed the cash.
Same. Each local and county gency I worked for issued credit cards to Department Heads and supervisors. Line staff were assigned a card when travel was required but it was turned in with the receipts upon their return.
The one Department that always had the most abuse was the PD or Sheriff’s Department.
An average of $10k per card.
That lack of oversight is an artifact of much federal spending independent of the vehicle by which the transaction was made.
For government rate hotels and government rate airline tickets and government rate rental cars and the holder is personally responsible for the expenses and it is routinely audited, and he is only reimbursed for vouchered authorized travel at the authorized government rates and is responsible for anything else. And because of Vegas, any disallowed expense, which the individual pays is a cause for discipline from training up through dismissal.
The government wants to prohibit the purchase of unhealthy food on welfare cards. I’ve had some renters who make their living by buying the most expensive meat and reselling it at cents on the dollar. Prohibit THAT!
Speaking of unhealthy. I had a renter who had not consumed solid food of any type for months. She drank beer and smoked cigarettes. Twinkies would have been a major step up. She looked like a tattooed zombie.
$10k for a travel card is these days 5-7 trips.
For for how many millions of employees and contractors?
(We can’t get them into the office, but they’re all flying all over the place every other month?)
At least with credit cards, purchases can be identified — for the most part.
according to Google AI [chrome] Federal salaries represent a relatively small fraction of total federal expenditures, typically falling around 4-5% of the total budget, meaning that federal employee compensation makes up only a small portion of overall government spending.
That means that 96% of the budget is managed by those earning 4% of the budget. Efficient? Well its probably too high, but that 96% is distributed all over the country and the program managers who manage it have to travel all over the country to do so. Imagine for instance a DOD program manager with a $500 M per year missile procurement program. He routinely needs to fly to visit the contractors, testing ranges, DOD maintenance sites, shipyards where equipment is being installed. If he doesn't travel he is certainly not doing his job.
His office may be in the Pentagon, but his job is all over the country.
That’s not really relevant here.
Sorry.
But I take it you’re a bureaucrat, defending your ilk?
No, sorry. My guess would be you’re a contractor.
