There are 7.3 million single mothers in the U.S., as well as 1.9 million single fathers. Single parents often face the dual challenge of being both the primary breadwinners and caregivers for their families.
This graphic, via Visual Capitalist's Bruno Venditti, represents the percentage of mothers in the U.S. who are single, by race/ethnicity, in 2023.
The data comes from the Center for American Progress.
In 2023, single-mother families accounted for 1 in 5 families with children under 18.
47% of Black mothers were single mothers.
25% of Hispanic mothers were single mothers.
The majority of single mothers are in their 30s or 40s and do not have a college degree. Overall, single mothers face a 28% poverty rate.
According to the Center for American Progress, family structures in the U.S. have changed significantly over the past five decades.
In 1970, 67% of adults (ages 25 to 49) lived with a spouse and at least one child.
By 2021, that number had dropped to 37%.
Marriage rates have also declined:
In 1970, 69% of adults were married, compared to 50% in 2021.
Meanwhile, the percentage of adults who have never been married rose from 17% to 31% over the same period.

The Rap Culture , mindset vocabulary and lack of impulse control as a way to dominate the discussion, is all part of what keeps that number of single black Mothers so high.
The welfare state is the main reason. It incentivizes women to bear children out of wedlock. It’s a career path for many.
That’s actually improvement from other stats I’ve seen so will embrace the progress?
And I do wish public figures like Elon Musk would set a better example in their personal lives. Not perfection — but upholding marriage…
“other”
What’s other?
What kind of math was used here this adds up to 125% ?????
And I do wish public figures like Elon Musk would set a better example in their personal lives. Not perfection — but upholding marriage…
+1. I don't get many Freepers' love of Musk. Until a few years ago many folks here hated him because he sold electric cars with government subsidies. He still sells electric cars and Tesla is still receiving government handouts, so what really changed?
Wrong on all counts.
The racist democrats starting with lbj designed the system to create this result.
There has been no progress.
The trick is probably their definition of ‘single mom’.
The numbers are far worse than this !
He is no saint or paragon of conservatism BUT he has stuck his neck out for Trump and put his social reputation on the line even more than some so called Republicans have. His full throated endorsement of Trump following the first assassination attempt was a major historical moment.
Another turning point was him opening up about his transgender son and the trauma of woke.
But his most crucial contribution was taking ownership of Twitter and insuring/ensuring free speech to millions, and protecting the flow of information at a time when our government was turning Soviet.
Native Americans and Mixed Race people may fall under other? And Middle Eastern people don’t fall so neatly into “White” and neither do 1st gen immigrant Americans in general?
Being a single mom is a profitable career choice. I use to live on Oahu. A woman who gets knocked up by someone with a drop of native blood can get 50 - 60 thousand a year in cash benefits with free housing, food, medical care, and a whole host of other freebies. I knew women who would have half a dozen bastard children with just as many bastard baby daddies who never worked a day in their lives. It wasn’t the most luxurious life but it was a free life.
Surprise!
Not me.
Society also encourages women to divorce, getting cash and prizes for doing so. Government “family court” makes over 60 billion a year off divorce, so they encourage it. And women who are emotional and impulsive (see emotional eaters, and imlulse buyers), who are fed so much propaganda about themselves, buy into it.
Ahem. Frankly, my first humorous thought was to butteg...buttieg...whatever. /s
Then the insult to ‘other’ sunk in, seemingly due to a lazy writer, lumping them all together.
THEN I learned that Bruno Venditti is Brazilian. “Latino” afaic.
So, now it appears he was looking to minimize the effect of the chart upon the 2nd highest group - Latinos - by grouping other races together under ‘other’.
It’s a shame. I crave data. That was crap. Biased crap.
These stats count a woman who got pregnant at 17, 19, and 22 and raised a brood of gangbangers who never knew their father(s) but who then finally gets married at 45 as NOT a single mother for the rest of her life.
The stats might also count a woman who was a single mother, then got married and got a quickie divorce, as NOT as single mother.
Statistics can be the tools of liars.
Regards,
I’m NOT shocked I tell you !!
I think it is the percentage of single mothers per race, not a sum of all births.
