Rush: Four Years On
SteynonLine ^ | February 17, 2025 | Mark Steyn

Posted on 02/18/2025 10:05:21 AM PST by Twotone

Four years ago today, just about this time, I was pottering about getting ready to guest-host The Rush Limbaugh Show when the telephone rang. It was Kraig Kitchin, his longtime friend (and head of the network that distributed his show), calling to break the news that Rush had died earlier that morning.

Post-Limbaugh talk radio seems smaller to me than it once did - not just because Rush had a big personality, but because he managed to fit the flotsam and jetsam of the news cycle into the big picture. Whatever topic he'd alight on, he would enlarge, and connect to the great coursing currents of the age. He was also incredibly, naturally funny. I have nothing against any of his successors up and down the dial, but, on the rare occasions I switch on the radio in his time-slot, it's not the same.

Two years ago, the anniversary of Rush's death fell on the day of our weekly Clubland Q&A. It wasn't intended to be a one-hour remembrance of America's anchorman, but, because listeners had so many questions about him and his show, it somehow turned into one. Listening to it later, I thought it was worth a re-broadcast - not just for the questions and answers, but for other aspects, too: a musical selection courtesy of his beloved Kathryn, a brief evocation of my guest-hosting days, and the last words Rush ever spoke on air.

I’ve been thinking about Rush lately and how much I miss him. It would be so much fun to listen to him discuss what’s going on now.

Rush Limbaugh was that wonderful mixture of Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Paine that comes along only once in a century. He’s irreplaceable. I turned off my radio the day he died, and I haven’t turned it on since.

Man I bet he misses covering the past four years until today!

But I’m sure it cannot compare with heaven either.

Pretty much the same here, I’ll listen if its on for a bit, but talk radio is simply not the same without Rush.

Agreed. Erick Erickson is definitely not his successor in any meaningful way.

From time to time, I tune into to his old time slot on the station I used to hear him on, and they have "Ken and Buck" and they both suck.

They are not even in the same class as Limbaugh.

There will never ve another Rush Limbaugh.

There are many talk shows on talk radio, but none are the same as Rush.

Me too. I remember the day we lost him and I’ve thought the same thing on how the last 4 hellish years almost ruined this country. He would have turned loose on these Communists only the way he could. Through God’s Grace we have another patriotic hero back in the White House. Rush would be so pleased....RIP Rush.

Rush Limbaugh was…… Irreplaceable.

Mega Dittoes. Pretty much only old Rock n Roll radio. Every once in a while, My City Was Gone/ Pretenders comes on, and i say, yeah, ditto that.

Dittos.

Rush was a phenomenon, where the right man for the format arrived when he needed to be there.

The format is dead/dying for most people - perhaps we see a new breed for a new format, such as Rogan podcast. (Not saying he’s a ‘Rush’, but a formidable communicator in his medium).

I always doubted Rush when he asserted: "we are winning".

Now, I'm finally starting to think we have the big "mo" thanks to God and his instrument: Donald Trump.

Agreed. Erick Erickson is definitely not his successor in any meaningful way.

First time I ever heard of "Erick Erickson" was when I heard he created "Red State."

"*RED*" state simply locked in the liberal propaganda they created to cover up the fact that Bill Clinton associated closely with Communists in the 1960s, when the nation was at war. He had communist connections in Russia and all over Eastern Europe. He was a communist supporter.

So naturally the media-liars helped him run interference with accusations of being a communist by coloring his campaign "Blue", and tagging George HW Bush as "Red."

Because if they had colored Clinton as "Red", then it would have been a lot easier for the public to see him for what he was. (Ronald Reagan used blue campaign material, as did HW Bush in his first election.)

So Erick Erickson made that bone head decision to refer to conservative America as "Red State".

Not a good start.

And then that stupid bastard started running interference for the non-American Barack Obama, and mocked and ridiculed anyone demanding proof Obama was actually a Natural Born Citizen.

Yeah, Erick Erickson is a dumbass.

We were better off before anyone knew his name.

It’s sad there’s no successor. There are a lot of smart commentators out there but they don’t have the Rush sense of humor. Take at Bill Mahre-please! He at least combines a sting in his humor. Rush didn’t have to use f bombs but the left does.

I was hopeful that Mark Steyn would take over his show. The best guest host, and the one who could best combine wit with conservative principles in the fashion of Rush.

Bo Snerdley and the editrix of the Limbaugh Letter, "Princess Di", talked about him in Bo's podcast yesterday.

Rush was completely unique. He had just the right amount of ingredients. I miss him a lot. I think with all he was going through the 20 steal broke him a bit. I wish he had lived to see the last 3 weeks.
