China could play 'substantial' peace role in Ukraine as US seeks a quick deal

China could send peacekeeping troops to Ukraine to help preserve any negotiated ceasefire in its war with Russia - as long as they are working with non-Nato countries like India - a former PLA colonel suggested.

Zhou Bo, a senior fellow at the Centre for International Security and Strategy at Tsinghua University, said that China had "sufficient troops and military strength" to contribute to an international post-war effort.

"However, if peacekeeping operations are conducted along with European countries, Russia might see it as another form of Nato presence, wouldn't they?" Zhou said in an interview on the sidelines of last week's Munich Security Conference.

In Ukraine, officials have long suspected that China would play a role eventually and have adjusted their rhetoric accordingly, asking EU officials to stop lumping Beijing with Iran and North Korea in terms of support for Russia, sources said.

When asked if China would play a major role in securing an end to the war, the former Ukrainian foreign minister Pavlo Klimkin said "my short answer is yes, and it's going to be a game-changer for Europe, the US and China".

"It is going to be the first time ever for China to start creatively and seriously talking about the European security architecture, about an eventual Chinese role in upholding it," he said.

According to Klimkin, China will play a "fundamental role" at the United Nations in ensuring that there is backing from non-Western countries for any resolutions on ending the war.

Kyiv has long viewed Beijing as the leader of the Global South and has avoided alienating it over the course of the war, partly in the hope of keeping those countries engaged.

Ever so clever. The article notes it would be "an international post-war effort."

Read that part, did you? Post-war. As in, after the war is concluded. Post-war.

China’s current peace plan doesn’t recognize occupied Ukrainian territory as Russian territory. China just entered the negotiations chat.

China wants the Port of Odesa operations. Just like the Panama Canal.

Then there's that part which reads: "China's role in the negotiations is likely to be limited, because of European and Ukrainian demands that a settlement comes with robust security guarantees. 'Given this context, what substantial role could China possibly play? China is not in a position to offer much at the current stage,' Sun said."

Reading the actual article can be fun and interesting.

China spokesman disagrees:

Zhou, the retired military officer who speaks as a People’s Liberation Army delegate at international summits, disagreed, saying that China could also be part of security guarantees, alongside other powers.

He noted Beijing’s involvement in the 1990s, when Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons and all five permanent members of the UN Security Council, including China, provided it with security assurances.

“Without collective security guarantees, Ukraine will not feel at ease - what if they [Russia] attack again at any time?”

China’s oil consumption is 14 million barrels/day, and growing.

China’s oil production is about 4.5 million barrels/day and in a slight decline. Their exploration offshore is very aggressive, but as usually proves true with this sort of thing, the huge oil deposits offshore that wildcat drillers said were there . . . have not proven to be.

So they need 10 mbpd imported for now. It will grow with consumption. As of now Russia is the primary source at 2.2 mbpd. KSA about 1.8. Malaysia 1.6. Iraq 1.1. Brazil about 1.

China’s natgas situation is worse than the above proportions.

Red China wants something else more they want a piece of Ukraine. They want to be seen as a legitimate player on the world stage, able to present herself as a non-partisan peace keeper, and trusted to have a role where the U.S. and NATO powers are not. They want a role that portrays them as fair-minded and civilized.

--- "China spokesman" --- Your addition to the text. Actually one learns from the aerticle, "Zhou Bo, [ is ] a senior fellow at the Centre for International Security and Strategy at Tsinghua University."

Compare and contrast your "quote" with the article's ---

Marcus -- "Zhou, the retired military officer who speaks as a People’s Liberation Army delegate at international summits, disagreed, saying that China could also...."

South China Morning Post: --- "Zhou disagreed, saying that China could also..."

The underlined above is not found in the South China Morning Post article as seen and read online. Not now. A simple word search of the SCMP article shows this.

Quite fascinating. You cite the Yahoo version, all the while SCMP does not reflect the same text. Your text.

Thank you for your patience.
At any rate, the SCMP original article as linked above does not have the Yahoo-quoted text. Seems the media game of Chinese whispers manages to show itself, and error is thereby promulgated.

"Zhou Bo, a senior fellow at the Centre for International Security and Strategy at Tsinghua University" is not a "China spokesman." Who is?

Small point: "Guo Jiakun (Chinese: 郭嘉昆; pinyin: Guō Jiākūn; born August 1980) is a Chinese diplomat, currently serving as the 35th spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China since 6 January 2025." Wiki.

The only way to ensure lasting Peace is to carve up Ukraine to its historic borders- Poland, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and of course the Russian Donbass. Each can rebuild at their own expense.

Trump and Putin are the only ones capable of negotiating anything lasting.
