A Mercer County grand jury has indicted Christopher Chad Butler, a former officer with the Princeton Police Department, on multiple charges related to sexual abuse and child neglect. The charges stem from incidents that allegedly occurred while Butler was working as a school resource officer at Princeton Senior High School.
Authorities accuse Butler of engaging in or attempting to engage in sexual activity with a minor student under his temporary supervision between August 2023 and January 2024. Under West Virginia law, individuals in positions of trust, such as school officials and law enforcement officers, are prohibited from such conduct.
In a separate case, Butler faces a charge of gross neglect of a child, which allegedly put a minor at substantial risk of harm. Prosecutors claim that in September 2023, Butler allowed a child to handle a firearm in a dangerous manner, endangering both the child and others present. The incident falls under state laws designed to protect minors from reckless endangerment.
The West Virginia State Police conducted an investigation into Butler’s actions, with evidence presented to the grand jury by Sgt. J.B. Yeager. Following the allegations, Butler was placed on administrative leave in January 2024 and later resigned from the Princeton Police Department the following month.
A special prosecutor from Monroe County handled the case, leading to Butler’s indictment. Law enforcement officials have not provided further details on his employment status or legal representation. If convicted, he could face significant legal penalties, including imprisonment.

These stories fascinate me in that I don’t understand how no one in the school, teachers, administrators, or other students noticed there was something going on between these two. Most schools, especially in WV are small or modestly sized. It’s kinda like a small town. People know each other and often times their business too. I think somebody could have cut this off at the pass.
