Mr. Trump was, to say the least, persuasive.
As a tool, tariffs may not be to everyone's taste, but they are a very effective policy instrument in President Trump's hands.
Trump knows how to use them.
Which is why we see this in Mexico, according to Border Report:
EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – A Mexican Senate commission has approved the entry of members of the U.S. Army’s 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) into the country starting this week.
The Americans will come fully armed as part of a mission to train the Mexican Navy’s Infantería de Marina (marine infantry) on conventional and non-conventional types of combat.
The training takes place from Feb. 17 through March 30 at the Luis Carpizo naval facility in the state of Campeche, according to Sen. Alejandro Moreno Cardenas, president of the Mexican Senate’s Naval Ministry Commission.
That's a dramatic change from previous hesitant attitudes towards hosting U.S. troops on Mexican soil. The Mexican War that ended in 1848, and the Pershing expeditions of the early 20th century pretty well have made it a no-go idea in most Mexican power circles until recently.
But that was before President Trump, who seems to have persuaded Mexico's leftist president, Claudia Sheinbaum, to go along with the idea and take it to her country's legislature, which gave the A-O.K. by a unanimous vote. That was an impressive persuasion.
Border Report says it was because of the threat of tariffs:

We better have troops ready too. The cartels will seek revenge in the USA.
it gets better by the day
I hope the non-military US citizens are ready, because they're the easy targets.
They certainly will. And they will lose. Any casualties on our side from their retaliation will only stiffen our resolve and perhaps lead towards a no holds barred crushing of the cartels.
Then a rooting out of all those they are paying to do their bidding within the Mexican government at all levels. I don’t think Trump is F-ing around here. Stakes are too high and danger aplenty to him and everyone here. Cartels MUST learn that they will pay for any retaliation against the US in their blood. Immediately. This might take a mini-civil war within Mexico proper, to accomplish.
And who trusts the troops
Isn’t this how we became embroiled in Vietnam?
Flame away!
Yes, sort of.
I think Kennedy was in process of disengaging when he was murdered then LBJ went in full hog wild afterwards.
The Boys are (back) in Town!!!
No flames.
Knew we were going to end up south of the border. Knew Mexico wasn’t going to do anything. Mexico is cartels. There’s a reason Madam President is still alive.
Just like we’re still digging latrines for Africa.
bttt
“This might take a mini-civil war within Mexico proper, to accomplish.”
Totally. It is not beyond the possibility however to have a mini-battle with the cartels that could drag out for a year. The drug and human smugglers may torch a few of our own and President Trump will retaliate with targeted force we haven’t seen since we have been alive. Then they can have civil war in Mexico after we take out the worst of the worst.
They will seek revenge via soft targets. No troops present.
Well, I declare!
Except Vietnam wasn’t on our border.
Vietnam was not on our border. If it was, we would have declared war as it should have been.
Been hangin’ down at Dino’s.
If my recollection is correct, this is how the Vietnam war started. When the Mexican army gets its rear handed to them in a basket things will escalate.
But there’s a huge difference. The cartels are directly affecting our national security as well as killing off our citizens with their drugs.
This nation building we’ve done in the recent past was pure BS to create a laundering system and keep the MIC afloat. The only nation that should have been invaded was Mexico. Clean the country of its criminal and communist elements and help them out, they are our neighbors.
Just think, Make Mexico Great Again (if it ever was) would keep their citizens within their borders, give them jobs, good housing and everything the US and Canadians have.
I’m personally in favor of MMG!
Not really a good idea. A lot of the mexican military wind up jumping over to the cartels because they pay better. Would be better to just let our guy operate there.
Precisely.
We had trouble enough with "blue on blue" attacks in Afghanistan - will the Colombian "Plata o plomo" approach be applied to the Mexican troops by the cartels?
