wow, financial times is a tough room. Sheesh ( pulling on collar)
Yeah put tariffs on energy when Trump is cutting them off from Iran. Those commies will show us.
Good plan!
Yawn. I am more than willing to pay more for crappy knock of trinkets to see China dealt with.
Decoupling trade with China is long overdue. Much better trade partners are available. We should also restrict and carefully monitor all Chinese citizens that enter the country. I would also issue state department advisory against US citizens traveling to China.
Who knows , if US can ramp up its energy sector, there will be more incentive to build manufacturing plants in the US.
I thought the left was screaming that our tariffs would hurt us. Therefore, by that nutty reasoning, the Chinese are hurting themselves.
EC
The way foreign countries impose sanctions on America is generally politically astute. They’ll target exporters with employees in areas where the President needs political support. When Bush II imposed steel tariffs to get votes in Pennsylvania the other side imposed tariffs affecting voters in other districts such that the political cost to Bush was greater than the gain he got from Pennsylvania. Very clever. But I don’t think this will work against Trump because he’s not currently running for office, and his general level of support is very high.
China hasn’t been good at this as there seems to be a disconnect between the people who know what to do and the leadership. Thus, random stuff happens which is generally bad for China.
China needs to be kicked out of our food production system…ownership of farm land, ownership of grain and seed companies, ownership of meat packers like Smithfield.
I got a “US Air Force, retired” cap, made in Bangladesh.
Fine, then don’t sell them the energy products. Use them at home, like replenishing the strategic reserve.
What will happen is now the BOAT loads of coal will go to Taiwan or Japan or S. Korea or India. They will unload it and transload it onto another ship that will sell it to CHINA.
They may mix in some coal from Australia or some other country to muddy the “origin” of where that coal came from.
India is the number one customer for US coal now. China is number two. India will probably just buy more and sell it to them.
Once the coal arrives at some foreign port it is kind of hard to establish where it came from.
The oil will be similar. Just like when everyone put a tariff on Russian oil there were traders in India making millions more profit reselling that Russian oil to someone else. The Indians were buying it at a discount.
Now, Indian coal traders will want to buy coal from the US at a discount so they can resell it to CHINA.
Bangladesh too and Ol Mexico.
My Wrangler jeans are made in Mexico.
My Timberland hiking boots I just bought were made in Bangladesh.
A couple years ago I bought Wrangler jeans that were made in Lesotho. A small country completely inside of South Africa.
I had never heard of it before. I looked it up on a map.
My Hanes underware were made in the Dominican Republic.
I started checking labels a few years back. I have tried to not purchase ANYTHING made in China. Even told people at retail stores as much. Did the same thing on line.
It is almost impossible to NOT buy made in China when it comes to electronics. Although I read a few months back that Foxcon had moved some of their smartphone factories out of China.
I feel sure that Trump was waiting for this response. He set the trap, now he counters with an increase of 40%.
Correct. Oil is fungible. We have plenty of buyers and they have a dwindling number of sellers.
I also check labels and avoid buying Chinese whenever possible.
the other country I try to avoid buying from is Pakistan. They do make a lot of our goods and hate us as much as the CCP but are smaller and don’t have the leverage China does.
That said, I don’t like supporting countries that are rooting for our demise and actively trying to enact it.
I totally agree with you.
Which is why I do not understand on the focus by Trump on Canada. Other than the means to get them to act on our border.
Like this morning the 25% tariffs on Aluminum and Steel.
Does Canadian metal really undercut the purchase price of US metals? I do not know.
What about the steel and aluminum being imported from Asia?
One of my sister companies used to import rebar from South Korea. They made a lot of money on it because it was much cheaper than domestic rebar. However, I never heard about Canadian rebar being a lot cheaper than US.
Aluminum manufacturing is heavily dependent on the price of electricity. Which is why aluminum manufacturing is primarily located in Washington State where hydroelectric power is cheap.
Great more cheaper oils for us.
Makes as much sense as illegals protesting waving their home country’s flags. Trump needs to put a stop to foreigners owning US lands.
