Wonderful rendition.
Beautiful.
” That’s one song that should not be about the singer; it’s all about the song. “
You hit it dead center.
It’s good to know I am not the only one sick and tired of the relentless ghettoing of a beautiful culture.
Considering the words of Francis Scott Keys poem was later set to the music of a popular British and somewhat bawdy drinking song, “To Anacreon in Heaven”, a song dedicated to the ancient Greek poet Anacreon, who was renowned for his drinking songs and odes to love, I really don’t have a problem with Batiste’s jazz interpretation, jazz being an American art form.
BTW, I’ve listened to his latest album, Beethoven Blues which IMO is brilliant. He attended the Juilliard School, receiving a Bachelor of Music in 2008 and a Master of Music in 2011, both in jazz studies - a very talented musician

FWIW that piano was hand painted by his wife in between her chemo as she’s battling her 3 round of cancer.
“Those familiar with Batiste will likely know that he’s a Christian. He was raised in the Catholic Church and went to an all-boys Catholic school in New Orleans which is renowned for its marching band.
Speaking of his daily routine, he’s said: “I start by sitting cross-legged on the wooden floor of my living room, closing my eyes, and doing some deep breathing. Then I get on my knees and read the Bible.”
And in a fascinating Q&A with The Cut, he said, “I don’t like satanic music because I’m a Christian” and that, if he was hosting a dinner party for three people dead or alive, he’d invite Jesus. “I would talk to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ to see how I’m doing,” he said.”
Sounded like he was reaching for notes and off key here and there
I think I’ve watched every Trump Rally since 2015, and I think there were only two renditions of the National Anthem where I didn’t grab for the MUTE button before two measures. WHY to they have to get so “creative” with this? It’s simple arrogance and the need for attention.
My 14-year-old niece sings it at school before all events, and it’s pure. She knows it’s not about HER; it’s bigger — unlike most of these “stars”. (She’s the only one who achieved a perfect score in decades when auditioning for Allstate Choir.) I guess she could schmaltz it up, but she won’t.
I didn’t think it was shameful. I thought it was stupid. He took our National Anthem and turned it into a lounge lizard song.
That is a salient observation, Allegra. That is the essence of it.
Thanks.
“Did they stop hiring Caucasians for the super bowl half time shows?”
The Rolling Stones and The Who played at halftime about 16 years ago. In the last 20 years, there have been 9 white musicians and white groups.
