Biggest quake yet could be still to come on Greek tourist island, seismologist warns

Rémy Bossu, Secretary-General of the European-Mediterranean Siesmological Centre, said “days, or perhaps, weeks” would be needed to evaluate the unusual tremors but said that the series of quakes typically occur in the build-up to a larger tremor.

A state of emergency has been declared in the idyllic Greek island of Santorini amid a series of near-constant tremors in recent days, which have almost emptied the famous Greek tourist haven of visitors and residents.

The largest tremor so far was recorded on Wednesday evening, when a quake with a magnitude of 5.2 coursed through the island. It was the first to exceed 5.0 since the tremors began last week.

Sitting near the boundary of the massive African and Eurasian tectonic plates, Santorini often experiences seismic activity, but rarely so intensely for so long. As well as Santorini, the nearby islands of Amorgos and Ios have also been shaken.

Bossu described the current seismic activity rocking Santorini – which is known as an “earthquake swarm” – as “very unusual.”

Normally, he says, “what you observe is a large earthquake followed by aftershocks which decrease with time in magnitude and frequency.

“Here, we observe a very different (phenomenon). We see that the magnitude has been increasing with time and the rate has been increasing, so this is not typical behavior,” he told CNN.

Something tells me those hundred+ year-old buildings will collapse all the way down. Standing in doorways won’t help. And the other islands-safe?

I had sex on Santorini once.
Do you think it’s my fault?

The panic pukes have been having a feild day with this.
Claiming the volcano is about to erupt and all that. The uplift in that volcano is just over 2 inches since last June
Nearly not worth mentioning.

The danger is landslides on that island and the tsunamis that might be caused as a result. Historically, they’ve had some real dandy tsunamis around there.

There was a 5.7 quake in N Nevada 12-9-2024, with 560 aftershocks thru 1-15-2025. Around 3 PM.

I live about 10 miles from the epicenter.

NO FUN. HOUSE WAS ROCKING & ROLLING.

HORSE WAS RUNNING IN HIS PASTURE.

From what I recall reading; approximately 3600 years ago a volcano by the name of Thera located within the archipelago of Santorini blew up with an estimated force of forty nuclear bombs and in the process permanently rearranged the Mediterranean. Some of the residue and particles which became airborne at the time could be found as far away as modern day Egypt. This explosion intermingles closely with some of the events as described in the Biblical story of the Exodus. Let’s hope we don’t witness a reoccurrence as it could rearrange the landscape of the Mediterranean again.

Seismic activity isn’t new to Santorini. A volcanic eruption that occurred around 1620 BC generated 40-foot tidal waves and killed about 40,000 people in the Mediterranean basin and was a major factor in the decline of Minoan Greek civilization.

One thing I’ve noticed on YouTube with the “live” videos of people being evacuated from Santorini- they keep playing the same video over and over.

“Live” my bloody behind…..

Ash from Thera fell on Greenland. Of course it wasn’t called Greenland yet.

The videos are put up by pirated youtubers to get hits.

I spend quite a lot of time sorting through to get to the actual news.

Hell, they are pirating even conservative news and putting up fake headlines to draw hits.
