That is true. If they had nukes they wouldn’t need Russia or NATO.
However, I am not sure what would have happened when they split off from the Soviet Union if they had tried to keep their nukes.
There is no chance that the Russians, including the ones that came to power to replace the communists that were driven out, were ever going to allow Ukraine to have nukes.
And, you're forgetting that Ukraine promised to be politically neutral so much so that that was written into its Constitution in 1996. The Ukrainians broke that pledge.
We promised Russia no eastward expansion of NATO in the early '90s as well if the Soviet Union broke.
Stop pretending the Western ruling class is noble and didn't break promise after promise.
