NFL fans are calling for a Super Bowl boycott after it was revealed the 'black national anthem' will be performed ahead of this weekend's big game in New Orleans.

'Lift Every Voice and Sing' is traditionally sung during the pregame festivities at the NFL's end-of-season showpiece, but has sparked huge controversy in recent years.

The league has confirmed that Grammy Award-winning singer Ledisi will perform the song - in front of President Donald Trump - shortly before Jon Batiste's rendition of the national anthem on Sunday, leading to a huge fan backlash online.

I agree. It is a nice song but a completely different purpose than the Star Spangled Banner, which was created for patriotism, reverence, sacrifice and symbolism. If some aren’t interested in the National Anthem, screw them.

The anthems are performed for the attendees as well as the players.

I've never noticed a ton of Chinese at the Superbowl, but hey, maybe. I know they love Corona and guacamole. /s

When the Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup with a team of Russians, I don’t remember the Russian National Anthem being played

Russians came here of their own accord. Bit different.

Back in 1993 it became a rally song for the Philadelphia Phillies. Worked pretty well up until the World Series. After the Joe Carter walkoff home run became probably the biggest Whoop there it is ever, I think it fell out of favour for the Phillies fans.

Oh, I was unaware that members of the NFL were forced to come to the United States. Nobody forced them to stay here. By the way does the statute of limitations on using your great great great grandparents as an excuse for everything ever run out?

No, I don't think they will ever get over it. And us barking "Get over it!" won't do anything but make them more stubborn.
