Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday not inviting Russia to events marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp was “shameful.”
“As for the invitation and non-invitation to events related to the liberation of Auschwitz, this is, of course, such a strange, shameful thing,” Putin said in an interview with Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin, an excerpt of which was shared on his Telegram account.
“You can have any attitude toward Russia’s policy, toward the head of the Russian state, toward me; no one is begging for any invitation. But if you think about it, you could have acted much more subtly,” Putin further said.
The Russian president argued that if it was no longer possible to invite Soviet soldiers who liberated the camp because of their health or age, their relatives could have at least been invited.

Russia has not been invited to take part in the annual events commemorating Auschwitz’s liberation since the start of the Ukraine war in February 2022.

And Ukraine still does.
Did you ever meet any Eastern Europeans, windbag?
They generally despise Russians.
And with good reason.
Whether Putin is being sincere or cynical is hard to say (I’d guess some of both), he is playing a limited hand pretty well by making this not be about snubbing himself, or even Russia, but the insult to the few remaining old soldiers and their survivors for whom the liberation of Auschwitz has deep personal meaning.
Yeah speaking in English is a real conspiracy.
Your words. Not mine. Merely noting how much messaging is aimed at us in the Enlgish-speaking world. Last time I checked, Kyiv was still in Ukraine, where Ukrainian is the local language.
Having lived in and worked in Europe, and perusing non-English news, one finds less of this sort of messaging? Why? Given the new information that USAID was busy handing out funding for LGBT+ projects -- that wacky Samantha Power and her Obama friends -- it is little wonder that "we" are marks for those who have gotten funding from the English-speaking world -- of liberals.
Yes. Worked contracts in a number of East European nations as well. How about you?
Putin has poor optics. He’s committing genocide right now in Ukraine.
Tell Putin to apologize for the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact and invading Poland with Hitler.
It was the Russians who liberated Auschwitz. Let’s not forget that.
If it wasn’t for the 1939 Non-Aggression Pact between Hitler and Stalin, there would have been no Auschwitz. But Russia wanted Poland one way or the other.
He is right. Soviets libersted the dang place afterall.
Any adults running ANYTHING anymore?
No.
Russia and Germany both started WW2 by invading Poland in 1939.
.
Then why did we help arm our ally, Russia, to fight the Germans if that is true?
We had no choice but to cast out the devil with Beelzebub.
And the reason the Soviets refused to form an alliance with Britain and France before they signed with Hitler, was that Britain and France would not give them Poland.
And then a few months later they invaded Finland and the Baltic countries.
And the Soviet Press and our Communists here at home were saying that the US should stay out of the “Imperialist European War”, they were the real isolationists, that is until Hitler invaded the Soviet Union.
