Putin calls exclusion from Auschwitz liberation event ‘shameful’

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday not inviting Russia to events marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp was “shameful.”

“As for the invitation and non-invitation to events related to the liberation of Auschwitz, this is, of course, such a strange, shameful thing,” Putin said in an interview with Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin, an excerpt of which was shared on his Telegram account.

“You can have any attitude toward Russia’s policy, toward the head of the Russian state, toward me; no one is begging for any invitation. But if you think about it, you could have acted much more subtly,” Putin further said.

The Russian president argued that if it was no longer possible to invite Soviet soldiers who liberated the camp because of their health or age, their relatives could have at least been invited.

Russia has not been invited to take part in the annual events commemorating Auschwitz’s liberation since the start of the Ukraine war in February 2022.

---- "Russians are pigs and pretty much all of Eastern Europe hates them as a result."

This is why you would never be invited to enter into a diplomatic contact with the intent -- as President Trump is showing -- of finding some solution to the Ukraine-Russia war. General Kellogg cannot carry such a bias with any hope of winning in a dialogue. Should President Trump speak to or meet with Putin, he would do well not to express your clear sentiment. SoS Rubio would not join in your sentiment.

But, it is most impressive that you are able to speak for "pretty much all of Eastern Europe."

As part of the Allied Forces during WW2, the Soviets (Russia) were instrumental in liberating death camps, particularly this one.

Ignoring their contribution, regardless of today’s conflicts, just seems wrong.

Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact

A week after signing the pact, on 1 September 1939, Germany invaded Poland. On 17 September, one day after a Soviet–Japanese ceasefire came into effect after the Battles of Khalkhin Gol, and one day after the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union approved the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, Stalin, stating concern for ethnic Ukrainians and Belarusians in Poland, ordered the Soviet invasion of Poland. After a short war ending in military defeat for Poland, Germany and the Soviet Union drew up a new border between them on formerly Polish territory in the supplementary protocol of the German–Soviet Frontier Treaty.

You raise a crucial fact: Hitler was determined to take down Moscow and Stalin knew it. When the Germans invaded Poland he “had to act” to hold off the Nazis and save “Mother Russia”. Sadly the Soviets lost 20-25 million souls, notwithstanding Stalin’s genocide in Ukraine. He remains the quintessential Leftist, and the Leftists, at large, are his adoring imitators.

Katyn massacre

The Katyn massacre was a series of mass executions of nearly 22,000 Polish military and police officers, border guards, and intelligentsia prisoners of war carried out by the Soviet Union, specifically the NKVD (the Soviet secret police), at Stalin’s order in April and May 1940.

The Wiki article you reference is most interesting. Did you notice in the page that a photo was included, bearing the subtitle -- "Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski laying wreaths at the Katyn massacre memorial complex, 11 April 2011?"

The larger theme of "sins of our (their) father" has a millennia-long history. Examples most recent include the Democrats' call for "reparations," as well as many others all across the world.

If, in 2011, a Russian President and a Polish President could have stood together to memorialize this event among so many atrocities, perhaps lessening the rhetoric's heat in much is a way forward.

And, similarly, turning the rhetorical heat up higher is the inverse.

Certainly, as President Trump and his team try to find a solution to the hot war between two non-NATO nations, bombastic statements will not aid in some diplomatic contact.

Only a day or two ago, you detailed the President's "plan," and when asked for a source, you did not reply. Have you a source to the "leaked" plan?

Not as shameful is not protecting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was told would be arrested if he came to the ceremony since he is considered a world court criminal. That is shameful!

Perhaps a history lesson needed for some.

Russia paid a far greater price in lives lost than did the other Allies during WW2. I agree, history lessons are needed here.

Sort of like if France had an observance day for D-Day and banned the Americans.

The Nazis used many Ukrainians to guard the camps.

It is disgraceful.

The Nazis could not have been defeated if not for the Russians. That's why the allied forces aligned with them.

That we and Europe have aligned with neo-Nazis in Ukraine and nation whose modern-day founder was a Nazi collaborator is disgraceful.

Yep, the Nazi's used a lot of Ukrainians for camp duties like this. Corpses were a valuable source of fat smelted down for grease for the war machine.

Putin should be at the Auschwitz liberation event.

Russia should not be in Ukraine:

Isn't it interesting how so much from Ukraine is in English -- as if the messaging is for us English speakers.....

So now transsexual Ukrainians are male again? The pendulum swings....

Odd. Your Wiki article showed this as already in the past, circa 2011. Didn't you read it?
