The first presidential election I remember taking an active interest in was in 1976. Jimmy Carter was running against Gerald Ford. I think the reason this election stands out in my memory is that I was in elementary school and the school held a “mock election.”
Even way back then, the public schools were actively indoctrinating the students with liberal ideologies, though none of us realized it. I remember the teacher giving us the basics on both candidates. Now, most likely we were told more about them than I remember now, but what sticks out in my mind is that Ford was considered as sort of a fool, being kind of “stupid,” known for falling down, and tripping a lot. I don’t remember learning much more about Ford. But we were told a lot about Carter…all superficial things. He was known for being a “poor” peanut farmer, and in rural Wisconsin, many of us kids grew up on farms, so we could relate to that. We were also told that Carter was humble and always stood up for the “little guy,” and how everyone loved his big, toothy smiles.

I remember my fourth grade teacher pimping McGovern in class back in `72 (man, I’m old).

I recall back in the 70’s, teachers would tell you about the typical political model in which communism was on the far left and fascism on the far right. American democracy is just a balance between the two, with Democrats a little to the left of Republicans. But that’s a false model, because what is fascistic about limited government, which is what Republicans believe in? Communism is actually just one form of fascism, since again the government has absolute power. To the far, far right therefore would be anarchy, but we of course don’t want that either. A more accurate representation of their model would therefore be fascism on the far left and anarchy on the far right, with the American form of democracy in the middle.

Same here, though it was our 3rd grade class. The only two Carter supporters were the teacher (first use of “Ms.” That I remember saving encountered, though I add that she was a great teacher) and the kid (now gay) whose dad was a big time union man. So, 24 for Ford, 2 for Carter. I really followed the 1984 and 1988 races a lot more closely, but it was the 1976 race that really got me into it.
I agree. This fixes nothing in the long term (temporally speaking.) The moral trajectory of society has been set, and it’s toward perdition. Democrats/leftists WILL eventually return to power, and when they do they’ll be 10x worse than before.
Interesting article. Like the author, I was also for Carter over Ford in 76. That was the first election where I was old enough to vote. And like the author I badly wanted Reagan to win four years later.
Your knowledge of Gerald Ford was from watching SNL.
We’ve e short time
If the Democrats gain power again, America is finished not long afterwards
When did endoctrination start, I remember hearing high school kids cheering after JFK got shot?
It's been on that road before. We're due for a spiritual awakening -- a revival.
Darn small screen phone 📱
We’ve HAVE but short time (window)
That depends on your biblical eschatology.
I was in 9th grade humanities class and tried to argue that point to the idiot teacher in charge, and got swatted down.
Fascism and Communism are both variations of statism.
The American Republic would be in the middle. Democracy would be closer to anarchy.
A one-dimensional model is too simplistic anyway—there are more than just two forces at work. And socialism, statism, communism, tyranny, etc. are all different sides of the same thing. It takes a lot of vigilance to maintain a system where government has enough power to function, but not enough to become a nuisance, let alone an intolerable dictatorship.
Indeed.
There is a reason the Framers killed the Confederation and replaced it with a Federal Government with significantly more power, but still had significant limitations and shackles
That was my experience as well. Ford was a stupid bumbling fool. Reinforced day after day by media focus on minor missteps. Compared to Biden though Ford was a ballerina.

Pfffft! I remember my fifth grade teacher lambasting Nixon for wage and price controls. So I guess I’m about two years older than you.
What sticks out in my mind about this was what a hypocrite Mrs. Bell was (yes, I remember her name) about that issue. After one diatribe of hers against it, I asked why she was so upset because everyone was being treated exactly the same way. She didn’t like that question very much. Of course, I didn’t understand economics, and the fact that wage and price controls are counterproductive, like I do now. but it seemed fair because it was across the board, yet she was upset. Well, this was my first lesson in liberal hypocrisy. She couldn’t have given less of a damn about anybody else, she just wanted her raise, and now she couldn’t get it because of Richard Nixon. I still smile on those occasions when I think about it. Nonetheless, she was a strict, but fair teacher, and pretty good at what she did, so I’m grateful for that and am certainly willing to give her credit where it is due. But she was just another liberal hypocrite.
Work on fixing the election system, we have very little time to do so. Voter ID, in person voting, ballots tied to a person, and votes not in by 8 pm are rejected.
Carter most resembled our last President. He was a yes man for the powerful.
