I didn’t much follow Russian dance/ballet, but no doubt there’s a strong correlation to the orchestral era. Surely Tchaikovsky would be indicative of the dance era given the related commissions.

Orlando Figes does a brilliant overview of every art form, from ballet to poetry to orchestral music to painting. Its all there. Chock full of personalities and incidents and of course, “the big picture”.
