Waymo, one of the companies at the forefront of driverless tech, confirmed to KTLA that it will begin testing fully autonomous passenger cars on L.A. freeways this week. Fully autonomous for Waymo means “without a human driver.”
The driverless white vehicles with radar gizmos attached to the roof and sides have already been ferrying riders on city streets across the area, from Santa Monica to downtown L.A. However, this is their first time conducting driverless tests on the interstates.
“Our initial testing will begin on the 10, 110, 90, and 405 (freeways),” Waymo told KTLA 5 News.
The initial tests will be for employees only to provide feedback on the service and overall rider experience.

THAT is as old or older than I am and that’s pretty old. Listened to it on an 78 record in the ‘40’s.....
“And please don’t slam the door” had a door slammed at the end....
Who get arrested for hit and run?
get should be GETS - proofread!!!!!!
My question is, can a driverless vehicle be commanded to “avoid ghetto”?
Exactly. Driverless vehicles are a big revenue-loser for states.
No. Driverless vehicles will tell you, "We need to drive this route. It is Ghetto-FABULOUS!"
No. Driverless vehicles will tell you, “We need to drive this route. It is Ghetto-FABULOUS!”
“We can’t close our eyes to the plight of the cities. Kids, are you noticing all this plight?”
“Kids, noticing all the plight?”
“Roll ‘em up!”
Dang it!
“You think these guys know The Commodores?”
Perfect
That's a legitimate question. My guess is that they are pre programed to avoid all such areas lest they be striped and defiled by the locals.
I was at the Phoenix a few months ago And one of the passengers didn’t close the back hatch all the way in the Waymo just sat there with blinking lights until Waymo sent out a tech to reboot it. Not very solid yet.
They already are invisible. Have you seen the window tinting? It’s like trying to look through black paint. I thought it was illegal but lots of things are illegal and since police are afraid to pull anyone over who might not be a white supremacist lots of laws are being unenforced.
I saw a video of a Waymo in Phoenix where the car just kept driving in circles of a hotel parking lot. The passenger videoed himself calling tech support. They couldn’t even shut the car off or reboot it remotely.
Sounds like I’m safe - LA is 3000 miles way.
amazing how Tesla has been struggling with their full self driving tech, and never have perfected it, yet Waymo has had these cars driving all over L.A. for years now.
Just like they do now: If you’re in a vehicle, you are considered as “Having care and control” of said vehicle.
You decide to “sleep it off” in the back seat of your car, the po-po WILL charge you for DWI, and win more often than not.
Meh. What could go wrong.
